9/8/19 Pastor Derek Dapena “Strangers” series, a study of 1 Peter

1. Read 1 Peter 1:3. Compare “Religious System - What you still need to do” verses “Relationship with Jesus - What He has already done”. Do you struggle with either of these and if so, how does your perspective differ from Peter’s in 1 Peter 1:3?

  1. Why do you sometimes fear going to Jesus in your sin or struggle?

  2. Read 1 Peter 1:3-5. God’s promises are eternal and always deliver; through Jesus we are qualified, rescued, redeemed, forgiven and caused to be born again, yielding new life. When you’re struggling, what thoughts tempt you to believe lies over His Truth?

  3. The level of your disappointments are directly connected to where we put our hope. What equations have you made that don’t line up with God’s promises and Truth? (Ex: dream job + savings account = safety; perfect spouse + two children = happiness; quantity of friends + popularity = value; etc)

  4. How do your current circumstances influence your hope? How does your Living Hope - Jesus, influence your current circumstances? What would those closest to you say?

  5. Read 1 Peter 1:4-5. Your inheritance, kept in heaven for you is a promise that includes a new resurrected body, a new heaven and earth, alongside Jesus Christ forever. How do these promises change your perspective in light of your current challenges, struggles, or disappointments?

  6. Read 1 Peter 1:6. In this you rejoice. Will you choose to surrender your disappointments and declare that nothing can take your Living Hope?
